Commercial auto
Commercial auto insurance is a complex maze of coverage options, limitations and exclusions that can spell disaster after a serious accident if written poorly. The placing agent must understand fleet underwriting criteria and the nature of the client’s business to know when special endorsements for cargo, equipment or hazardous materials are needed. An advisory agent should also be ready to suggest risk management measures, and is expected to place coverage with financially sound insurers at limits that fit the risk.
Personal auto
Personal auto policies need fewer endorsements, but an agent who assumes an advisory role can still leave a client badly exposed. Common areas of vulnerability:
- Failing to name all insurable interests, including owners, lessors, loss payees and additional insureds
- Failing to add or remove vehicles as requested
- Failing to add all coverage requested
- Failing to recommend liability limits adequate for a foreseeable catastrophic claim
- Failing to properly report a claim and advise the customer of their rights and duties
